Close to Brantôme in Perigord Vert, you will find the Grotte de Villars, a natural prehistoric cave. An underground river has hollowed out huge caves joined by galleries. All kinds of concretions can be found here: calcite flow, stalactites, gour pools, translucent rock curtains, stalagmites. A spectacular son et lumière setting shows the stages in the formation of the cave. The prehistoric section is decorated with rock paintings dating from 17,000 years ago. Some, like the horses rotunda, are covered with a fine film of calcite that gives them this particular bluish colour. The Sorcerer and the Bison is one of the rare depictions of a human in prehistoric art.
