The fascinating grotte du Pech-Merle was discovered in 1922 by youngsters, on the hill overlooking the picturesque village of Cabrerets. “The Sistine Chapel in the Causses, one of the finest monuments of Stone Age pictorial art” (Abbé Breuil). Mammoths, bison, horses, signs, red and black stippling, human figures, hands, footprints – all this evidence that remained hidden for thousands of years is still visible to us now. Seven caves reached through a 1200-metre long path display the exuberant and fabulous wealth of underground landscapes. The entrance ticket also gives access to Museum of prehistory (wall paintings from Quercy and regional prehistory).
Open from April to October
